Tottenham Hotspur remain optimistic about completing the signing of Morgan Gibbs-White, despite tensions with Nottingham Forest over accusations of an illegal approach.
Spurs appeared to be closing in on the 25-year-old midfielder after triggering his £60 million release clause and scheduling a medical.
However, Forest claim they never granted permission for Tottenham to speak with the player and are reportedly considering legal action for a possible breach of confidentiality concerning the release clause.
The dispute has left many fans puzzled, questioning how Forest can block the move when the release clause has already been activated.
Reports suggest Forest are preparing to file a formal complaint with the Premier League, arguing that Tottenham’s bid—matching the release clause—was submitted improperly.
Nevertheless, Football London reports that Spurs remain confident the deal will go through. The prevailing belief within the club is that Forest may be able to stall the move but ultimately can’t stop it.
Gibbs-White was noticeably missing from Forest’s squad in their first pre-season friendly—a 0-0 draw against Chesterfield—fueling speculation that his absence was due to the ongoing transfer situation.
However, sources clarified that the England international wasn’t due to return just yet, as he had been part of the national squad last month. He is expected to rejoin training in the coming week.
The report adds that new Spurs boss Thomas Frank is a big admirer of Gibbs-White, having been impressed by his consistent performances in midfield for Forest over recent seasons.
Last season, Gibbs-White tallied seven goals and eight assists in the Premier League, drawing attention from several top clubs—including Manchester City.
Tottenham have already been busy this summer, bringing in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham in a £55 million deal. They’ve also secured permanent moves for Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich and Kevin Danso from Lens following impressive loan spells.
