Opportunities to strengthen an NFL roster don’t come around often—and when they do, they don’t last long.

Right now, the Arizona Cardinals have a clear shot at addressing one of their biggest offensive needs. But if they don’t act soon, that window might close.

Earlier this offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars cut ties with wide receiver Gabe Davis. After a strong stretch with the Buffalo Bills, Davis struggled in Jacksonville, putting up career lows across the board—receptions, yards, touchdowns, and yards per catch. He didn’t become the reliable No. 2 option the Jaguars hoped he would.

That release opened a door for the Cardinals. In 2024, Arizona lacked a vertical threat on offense. Kyler Murray’s average depth of target was just 6.9 yards—ranking 31st in the league, according to Yahoo Sports. Defenses didn’t have to respect the deep ball, which made life harder for Arizona’s top playmakers.

Without a deep threat to stretch the field, players like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride were constantly forced into tight, contested situations. It limited the offense’s overall effectiveness.

Gabe Davis could be the missing piece. He brings speed and field-stretching ability—exactly what Arizona needs—and he’d come at a bargain since Jacksonville is still picking up most of his salary. But the Cardinals may be letting that opportunity slip through their fingers.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that Davis recently met with the New Orleans Saints and previously visited the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With more interest building, it’s only a matter of time before he finds a new team.

The Cardinals should move fast to bring him in. If they hesitate any longer, they might regret watching Gabe Davis line up against them when they face the Saints to kick off the 2025 season.
