Tennis star admits having suicidal thoughts and 'not wanting to live' in emotional letter

Tennis player Federico Agustin Gomez has shared a deeply emotional letter, disclosing that he has struggled with suicidal thoughts on multiple occasions.

In a candid and worrying social media post about his mental health, Gomez expressed that he has hit “rock bottom” after enduring what he described as “the worst year personally.”

He courageously opened up about the toll these dark thoughts have taken on his mental health. Addressing his 10,000 Instagram followers, Gomez wrote, “The past six months have been among the most challenging I’ve ever faced as a person.”

The 28-year-old Argentine, currently ranked 135th in the world, has claimed three titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. Earlier this year, he competed in the Brisbane International ATP 250 event and later participated in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open.

While his professional career is gradually gaining momentum, his mental health has suffered significantly.

“Living with thoughts of leaving tennis completely, of really questioning if all this is really worth it and even on several occasions suicidal thoughts of not wanting to live anymore and leave this world, which is very difficult for me to express.” He continued: “I wanted you to know so you can understand actions or behaviours that I possibly had in this last time and this seeks to explain a little of that. It is very hard for me to write all this without crying my eyes out, but I think it is the best decision I could have made at this time to get rid of this heavy weight that I feel on me and that eats my head 24/7.”

Gomez emphasized that his decision to share his struggles wasn’t about seeking attention or fame, but rather about finding personal healing and inspiring others to speak openly about their own challenges.

He added: “I will try to get back that natural joy that characterised me and mainly to feel good about myself knowing that ‘it’s okay not to be okay’.

“As I said before, it is a huge pain for me to open up in this way but I felt the need to tell you a little bit about my situation. I am still searching for my best self. I will work to find that emotional wellbeing that I once felt.”

Gomez’s candid confession sheds light on a pressing issue that has impacted many tennis players, especially within the men’s circuit. In 2019, Nick Kyrgios revealed that he had struggled with suicidal thoughts and sought psychiatric treatment following his participation at Wimbledon.

Similarly, Australian women’s tennis star Destanee Aiava has spoken openly about battling suicidal tendencies before being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. These stories highlight the mental health challenges faced by athletes in the sport.

Unstoppable Emma Navarro secures WTA 500 glory with ruthless 6-0, 6-0 win at Merida Open

Emma Navarro put on a dominant display against Emiliana Arango, capturing her first WTA 500 title—and the second title of her career—with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory. The American delivered a near-flawless performance to claim the biggest win of her career.

Ranked No. 10 in the world, Navarro needed less than an hour to dismantle Arango. She was highly effective on serve, winning 67% of points on her first serve and 71% on her second. However, her return game was even more impressive, as she claimed 74% of points when receiving.

Navarro’s aggressive and precise play left Arango struggling to keep up. The Colombian’s woes continued into the second set, where she failed to hold serve. Navarro broke early and raced to a 3-0 lead, putting the match firmly out of reach.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Navarro remained locked in, closing out the match with a double bagel. She converted her third match point on Arango’s serve, finishing with an outstanding 72% success rate on her own serve and 71% on return—extraordinary numbers for a WTA 500 final.

With this victory, Navarro ensures her place in the top 10 and will rise to world No. 8, pushing Zheng Qinwen down to No. 9.

Meanwhile, Arango may have suffered a crushing loss in the final, but she has plenty of positives to take from the tournament. Reaching her first WTA final has propelled her over 50 spots in the rankings, and as of Monday, she will enter the top 100 for the first time at No. 80, securing direct entry into future Grand Slam events.
