Southampton have identified Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as a potential replacement for Russell Martin, with some within the club reportedly viewing the German tactician favorably, according to journalist Jack Rosser.

The Saints parted ways with Martin after a crushing 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. Under-21s manager Simon Rusk has stepped in as interim boss, starting with the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin’s sacking was confirmed less than 90 minutes after the final whistle at St. Mary’s, marking his 13th Premier League defeat in just 16 games.

Southampton currently sit at the bottom of the league table, having managed only five points from a possible 48.

Rosser reports that while Southampton’s exact approach to appointing a new manager is still uncertain, they seem more inclined to consider a foreign candidate at this stage.

Danny Rohl, who took charge at Hillsborough in October 2023, became the youngest manager in the English Football League at just 32. In his debut season, he successfully guided Sheffield Wednesday away from the relegation zone.

The highly-regarded German coach demonstrated his commitment to the Owls by signing a new three-year contract over the summer. Reports suggest it would take a significant compensation package to lure him away from the Championship club.

Currently, Wednesday sits ninth in the table after 21 games, just five points shy of the playoff spots, with only one loss in their last six matches.

Meanwhile, Russell Martin became the second Premier League manager to be dismissed last weekend, following Gary O’Neil’s sacking by Wolves, who are 19th in the standings.

Al-Shabab manager Vitor Pereira has emerged as the frontrunner for the Wolves job, with reports indicating he has already engaged in talks with the club.
