Rangers have reopened discussions with Danny Rohl as they continue their search for a new manager, though GIVEMESPORT understands there are two main candidates still in contention for the Ibrox job.

It’s now been over two weeks since the club parted ways with Russell Martin, and the hunt for his replacement has been anything but smooth.

The Glasgow side appeared close to appointing Kevin Muscat, but sources confirmed on Sunday evening that negotiations collapsed at the final stage.

Over the weekend, Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Dundee United, with James Tavernier rescuing a late point. The team was managed on an interim basis by Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen, and Sal Bibbo as the club continues its managerial search.

According to GIVEMESPORT, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl is once again in talks with Rangers, despite having previously turned down the opportunity. It’s believed that he and one other unnamed contender remain in the running for the position.

Rohl was one of the leading candidates alongside Muscat last week before withdrawing from consideration.

However, with Muscat now out of the picture, Rangers have reopened talks in hopes of convincing the 36-year-old to take the job.

The search has proven challenging, with several potential managers either declining or withdrawing from discussions. Both Muscat and Rohl initially stepped away, while Steven Gerrard was reportedly close to a sensational return before deciding the timing wasn’t right.

Rangers face Brann in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by league fixtures against Kilmarnock and Hibernian before the second Old Firm derby of the season in early November.

The club hopes to have a new manager appointed before their next match, though after more than two weeks of uncertainty, there are still no guarantees.

Andrew Cavenagh wants new Rangers manager before Thursday as sensational twist emerges

Rangers’ ongoing search for a new manager has taken a chaotic turn in recent days.

Steven Gerrard, who was initially the frontrunner to return to Ibrox, pulled out of the running after holding talks with the club. Soon after, former Rangers player Kevin Muscat looked set to take charge, but that deal also collapsed on Sunday despite an agreement in principle.

The situation has left the 49ers Enterprises group and chairman Andrew Cavenagh under mounting pressure, as frustration grows among supporters who are beginning to question the leadership at the club.

Danny Rohl, who had previously rejected the opportunity, now appears to have reconsidered. According to a report from the Scottish Sun on 19 October, Rangers have “sensationally” reopened discussions with the German coach following the breakdown of the Muscat deal.

Cavenagh is reportedly keen to have a new manager appointed in time for the Europa League clash with Brann on Thursday, 23 October.

Rohl’s background suggests he’s well equipped to handle the challenges at Ibrox. He managed Sheffield Wednesday during a turbulent period under owner Dephon Chansiri and has also held assistant roles with the German national team and Bayern Munich — both high-pressure environments where success is demanded.

Known for his tactical flexibility, Rohl typically alternates between a 4-2-3-1 and a 3-4-2-1 formation depending on the opponent, unlike Russell Martin, who stuck rigidly to his system. He also favours a style that makes strong use of wingers — a philosophy that could benefit current Rangers player Djiedi Gassama, who previously worked under Rohl at Hillsborough.

One thing is clear: Rangers must make an appointment soon to calm growing unrest among their fans. However, if they get it wrong again, the consequences could be disastrous for their season.

Rohl’s experience at elite levels of football may have prepared him well for the pressures of managing the Light Blues — and if he does take the job, supporters will hope he can finally bring stability back to Ibrox.
