Drew Lock is heading back to familiar territory. The quarterback has re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks after a short stint with the New York Giants.

Lock originally landed in Seattle as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in 2022.

There was initial buzz that he might challenge for the starting job, but it quickly became clear that Geno Smith was the guy.

Lock’s time with the Giants in 2024 was largely uneventful—until Week 17, when he erupted for a stunning 309-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Colts.

In an otherwise anemic Giants offense, it was a bizarre and brilliant outlier from a player who had barely seen the field.

Before his New York detour, Lock did get a couple of starts for the Seahawks in 2023.

He split the results—one win, one loss—and finished with three touchdowns and three interceptions, completing 63% of his passes. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was serviceable.

Lock reportedly left Seattle in pursuit of a clearer path to a starting role, but the Giants didn’t provide that opportunity.

Now back with the Seahawks, he returns to a system and coaching staff he knows well. He’s unlikely to push Geno Smith for the starting gig, but he brings experienced depth to the QB room and another chance to prove himself if the opportunity arises.

Drew Lock reportedly signs with the Seattle Seahawks in a strange move

The Seahawks’ quarterback room just got even more crowded—and a bit more complicated. With the offseason addition of Sam Darnold as the clear QB1, the spotlight now shifts to Sam Howell and Drew Lock, who recently re-signed with Seattle. Of the two, Howell may have more reason to be concerned.

Howell, entering the final year of his rookie deal, was a full-time starter for the Commanders in 2023 but struggled mightily.

After being traded to Seattle, he didn’t impress in limited reps, and his grip on a roster spot looks tenuous.

Many expected Seattle to target a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft to develop behind Darnold, but that possibility now seems unlikely.

With Darnold, Howell, Lock, and potentially a rookie, the Seahawks would be left with four quarterbacks—and most teams only carry two on the active roster.

That begs the question: What convinced Lock to return, especially when there’s no guaranteed path to a roster spot? He and his wife reportedly enjoyed living in Seattle, but sentiment alone likely didn’t seal the deal. General Manager John Schneider must’ve made a strong pitch.

Contract details for Lock haven’t been made public, but they’ll be crucial to evaluating the decision. Howell is due just $1.1 million in 2025, making him a budget-friendly backup.

If Lock signed for significantly more and ends up replacing Howell without a clear performance upgrade, the Seahawks may find themselves paying more for a lateral move—at best.

Seattle’s quarterback depth may look strong on paper, but it raises more questions than answers heading into the season.
