Tottenham Hotspur are actively working to streamline Thomas Frank’s squad, with one young player set to depart soon.
As Spurs players returned to Hotspur Way this week for the start of pre-season training, it gave newly appointed head coach Thomas Frank his first proper opportunity to evaluate his squad.
The Danish boss now faces some big decisions regarding who stays, who gets loaned out, and who might be sold. With their first pre-season game just under two weeks away, the club’s transfer activity is starting to pick up pace—beginning with a promising young striker who looks set to leave.
According to TyC Sports, Tottenham and Argentine club Rosario Central have reached a verbal agreement for Alejo Veliz to rejoin his former side on loan.
While Spurs had initially hoped for a permanent move, they agreed to the temporary deal out of respect for Veliz’s strong desire to return to Rosario, the club he left in 2023. The loan will reportedly not include a purchase option.
Other Argentine giants like Racing Club, Boca Juniors, and River Plate had also shown interest, but Veliz was adamant about returning to Rosario Central.
Tottenham originally signed the 21-year-old for £13 million, but he has made only eight appearances for the club and has since had loan stints at Sevilla and Espanyol. Despite high hopes, he struggled to make a significant impact during those spells.
Veliz was once described as having “phenomenal” finishing ability, and both Erik Lamela and former Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou have spoken glowingly about his potential.
Though Lamela and Veliz were both at Sevilla briefly, they never shared the pitch. Lamela praised him as the “best of the best” when Veliz joined Espanyol, while Postecoglou remarked that the young forward had “a lot of talent” when he first arrived at Tottenham.
Speaking after his arrival back in 2023, Postecoglou said: “With young Veliz, he’s one we identified and he’s got a lot of talent for a youngster.
“He’s got a great profile. He is a big guy, but he’s very mobile and he works hard. He’s already made an impact in the Argentine first division, and again good to have him in.”
