Raheem Sterling has no plans to cut short his season-long loan at Arsenal, according to a recent report.
The ex-Liverpool and Manchester City forward found himself sidelined at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca at the start of the season. Left out of Chelsea’s squad for the opening Premier League game, Sterling secured a move to Arsenal on deadline day.
The deal was met with optimism, as Arsenal reportedly cover less than half of Sterling’s £325,000 weekly wage, with Chelsea paying the rest. Mikel Arteta, who previously worked with Sterling at Manchester City, was enthusiastic about reuniting with him.
However, Sterling has struggled for regular playing time, with Premier League starts becoming rare and no appearances in recent weeks. The four-time Premier League champion has been an unused substitute in Arsenal’s last four matches across all competitions.
His last league start was in October against Bournemouth, where he was subbed off in the 37th minute after William Saliba’s red card forced a tactical adjustment. The decision to sacrifice the experienced winger was seen as significant.
Despite limited opportunities, Sterling remains committed to Arsenal, as reported by the Evening Standard. The forward is said to be “determined” to fight for his place in the starting lineup and is still regarded as a viable option by Arteta.
When asked this week if there was a specific reason Sterling had been left out, Arteta curtly responded, “No.”
Arsenal’s boss has previously explained that Sterling’s lack of minutes has weighed heavily on him. “I would like him to play much more as I think he can impact the team in a very good way,” Arteta outlined earlier this month. “He’s very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play.”
