Newcastle United are preparing for a busy summer in the transfer market as they gear up for their return to the Champions League.
While they could technically splash out up to £500 million thanks to a stronger PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) standing, it’s highly improbable they’ll go that far. Still, the club is in a far better financial and strategic position than in previous windows, and key reinforcements are expected.
A major priority for Eddie Howe is to bring in a right-sided forward to complement players like Jacob Murphy. Joao Pedro is high on Newcastle’s wishlist, but he’s not the only player they’re eyeing.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle have already discussed the possibility of signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United in internal meetings.
Kudus is seen as a versatile attacker who can play in multiple forward roles, and he fits the profile of the kind of dynamic player Howe is after.
In addition to Kudus, the Magpies are also considering more traditional wingers like Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
West Ham are reportedly open to selling Kudus this summer, and the Ghanaian international is eager to remain in the Premier League, despite receiving interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.
Interestingly, English clubs might be able to secure him for around £50 million — a notable discount from his £80 million release clause.
That price tag could make Kudus a tempting option for Newcastle, even though Joao Pedro currently tops their shortlist.
Like Kudus, Pedro is believed to be keen on a move and views a switch to St James’ Park as a major opportunity.
It’s unclear whether Kudus would be equally enthusiastic, but given Newcastle’s ambitions, it would be surprising if he weren’t interested.
Newcastle have also been previously linked with Kudus’ West Ham teammate, Jarrod Bowen. However, a move for Bowen has always seemed out of reach financially, while Kudus appears to be a much more realistic target.
Kudus has consistently impressed in the Premier League, and if Newcastle need any more convincing, Pep Guardiola’s praise last year might help tip the scales.
Speaking in May, Guardiola described Kudus as “exceptional” and also applauded other West Ham players like Bowen, Antonio, and Paqueta.
While Bowen may remain out of Newcastle’s reach, Kudus looks like a very real possibility — and a potentially transformative addition to Howe’s squad.
