New revelation from The Times about Lopetegui surely means he’ll be sacked within 72 hours
Julen Lopetegui is likely on his way out at West Ham United following another damaging revelation.
West Ham’s 2024/25 season has been a complete disaster since Lopetegui took charge in the summer. Reports suggest he could be dismissed if the team’s performances don’t improve over the next two games, regardless of the results.
The Hammers have been abysmal this season, and the current points tally is only a slight consolation. West Ham have suffered eight losses by three goals or more – an unacceptable statistic by any measure.
The team’s performances have been consistently subpar, and Lopetegui appears to be at a loss as to how to fix the issues.
Now, a shocking new revelation has emerged, one that calls for his immediate sacking if the board is serious about making a change.
Despite taking charge, Lopetegui has failed to improve the quality of football at the club.
What makes this situation even worse are some of the humiliating defeats, including the recent 5-0 home loss to Liverpool, which was the breaking point for many fans.
The players were far too passive, allowing Liverpool to dominate with ease. It was a disgraceful, cowardly performance from Lopetegui’s side, deserving of nothing less than a heavy defeat.
Aside from a few decent outings here and there, such as the Newcastle away game and the Ipswich home match, West Ham have been miles off the mark.
A new report from The Times now underlines just how poor the team has been off the ball this season, which could likely seal Lopetegui’s fate within the next few days.
“West Ham allow their opponents on average 13.5 passes before they make a defensive action. That means they have one of the least intensive presses in the league.”
“If you’re a team that likes to sit back and allow the opposition to have the ball — such as Everton or Forest — that’s fine. The problem is, if you press up against your opponents man-to-man, and set up to play with intensity, but press without it, it’s very easy for opponents to play through you, find open space and get good opportunities to score.“
This is an incredibly shocking statistic, and it clearly shows that the players are not playing for Lopetegui.
It has been reported that West Ham might part ways with Julen Lopetegui if they suffer a heavy loss to Manchester City on Saturday.
Another lackluster, passive performance against the Premier League champions could lead to the Hammers searching for a new manager within the next 48-72 hours.

Man City to decide Kyle Walker future as a ‘business deal’ in January transfer window
Gary Neville believes that Kyle Walker’s request to leave Man City may be due to the mental and physical strain of keeping up with the demands of Premier League football.
The City captain has informed director of football Txiki Begiristain of his wish to depart this month, with AC Milan showing interest. Since expressing his desire to leave, Walker has not featured in matches against Salford City and Brentford.
Despite remaining club captain, Walker has not worn the armband during recent substitute appearances and has struggled with his form this season, facing fitness issues as the City squad endures a challenging period.
On the Stick to Football podcast, Neville suggested that Walker’s decision to seek a move could be related to the difficulties he’s faced during this tough campaign.
“He’s captain of the team, it’s midway through a challenging season. When I saw that he had asked to leave, he’s got a good relationship with the manager – but I reckon he said he’s just done,” he said.
“At City, the demands of Pep Guardiola and playing at that level, I think he thinks that he can’t do it anymore at this level and just wants to get out. Mentally and physically, he just looks beaten – that’s just what I feel, I don’t know.”
Roy Keane suggested that Kyle Walker’s off-field problems could be impacting his performance, given that his personal life has frequently made headlines in the media and gossip columns.
Keane also advised Manchester City to view Walker’s request to leave as a business transaction, noting that the club has previously secured good value from players who have left in recent seasons.
“A lot of players have off the pitch issues – not just Kyle Walker – and eventually it does catch up with your performance on the pitch and it takes its toll on you,” he said.
“I have no problem with a player saying that he needs a change, but in the middle of the season when your team are struggling – I would just bide my time. I still think Manchester City will look at this as a business deal.
“It is affecting his game now – I think it has taken its toll. Other players have been under huge pressure, whether it be Wayne Rooney or David Beckham, they get on with it and the best place for them to be is the football pitch.
“For other players, the pressure piles on them and then their performances are affected. I think Pep will look after him, but whether that’ll mean letting him go on the cheap, I don’t know.”

Newcastle set to accept Atlanta United’s £10m for winger – report
Newcastle are preparing to accept Atlanta United’s £10 million offer for Miguel Almiron, with the transfer expected to be finalized soon, according to Mail Sport.
In contrast, the club has turned down a bid of over £6 million from Fenerbahce for defender Lloyd Kelly.
Progress on that deal appears unlikely unless the Turkish side significantly increases their offer.
Almiron, 30, is reportedly eager to return to his former club, and discussions are set to accelerate this week, potentially ending his six-year stint at Newcastle.
However, the club is not expected to bring in a replacement for him, leaving them short on options in wide areas.
This is especially concerning as Harvey Barnes remains sidelined for about a month due to a thigh strain.
Fenerbahce’s interest in Kelly persists, but Newcastle would only consider selling if they receive a far more substantial bid than the initial one, which the club doubts will materialize.
Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle climbed to fourth in the Premier League after securing their sixth consecutive win in a dominant 3-0 victory over Wolves on Wednesday.
Almiron has been a consistent presence for Newcastle over the years, scoring 30 goals in 222 appearances. However, he has seen his role diminish this season, with Howe favoring Jacob Murphy on the right wing.
Despite having a contract until June 2026, Almiron has only made one league start this season but remains part of the matchday squad. He came off the bench during Wednesday’s win over Wolves.

West Ham have made official enquiry to sign £120k-a-wk Premier League striker in the January transfer window
West Ham United are targeting the signing of a Premier League striker during the January transfer window.
Manager Graham Potter is fully aware of the need to bolster his attacking options before the window closes. Nice forward Evann Guessand is reportedly the Hammers’ top priority this month, but the club is also exploring alternative targets.
Currently, Potter is without Niclas Fullkrug, Michail Antonio, and Jarrod Bowen, with Bowen being the only one expected to return in the near future. Securing reliable reinforcements in the center-forward position is now a pressing need for West Ham.
West Ham want to sign Premier League striker in January window
Securing the signing of a proven striker before the month ends is critical for Graham Potter.
The current center-forward options at his disposal are inadequate, and reports suggest that West Ham has a plan to bring a Premier League striker to the London Stadium.
According to Give Me Sport, the Hammers have inquired about Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Before Potter’s arrival, Julen Lopetegui was reportedly considering the 27-year-old injury-prone forward as a long-term replacement for Michail Antonio.
Calvert-Lewin, who earns £120,000 per week at Everton (Salary Sport), is out of contract this summer. However, West Ham seems interested in securing a deal this January.
That said, pursuing Calvert-Lewin could be a significant mistake. His injury record raises major concerns—he has missed 69 games since the start of the 2021/22 season (Transfermarkt). Turning 28 in March, his injury troubles are likely to worsen with time.
West Ham should steer clear of signing Calvert-Lewin during the January window, as such a move could prove to be an expensive misstep.
