Manchester United’s quest to add strength in midfield could see them revisit a well-known figure in English football. According to Caught Offside, Joao Palhinha has emerged as a key target for the Red Devils this summer, with the 29-year-old attracting attention from several Premier League sides due to his potential availability.

“Ruben Amorim is keen to include Palhinha in his wider squad plans, but a move will only materialise if the financial conditions align with Manchester United’s expectations,” the report reveals.

While manager Ruben Amorim seems to be playing a role in shaping United’s transfer strategy, even his influence might not be enough to retain a player whose proven quality in the Premier League continues to draw strong interest.

Joao Palhinha’s stint at Bayern Munich hasn’t lived up to expectations. The Portuguese midfielder, who joined from Fulham in a €50 million move last summer, managed just six Bundesliga starts and featured only twice in the Champions League — a disappointing return for a player once considered one of the Premier League’s top ball-winners.

Bayern appear open to cutting ties, with reports suggesting they’re willing to accept a fee in the €30–35 million range. The German club is reportedly prioritizing a contract extension for Leon Goretzka, while Palhinha’s camp explores opportunities for a Premier League return.

Clubs like Fulham, West Ham, and Nottingham Forest are keeping tabs on the situation, but budget limitations and fitness concerns could tilt the scales in Manchester United’s favour.

United’s midfield clearly lacks physicality, leadership, and consistent tactical discipline. Casemiro’s form has dipped, and the younger midfielders have yet to establish themselves. Palhinha, if fully fit and focused, could offer the grit and stability that United sorely missed in several key matches last season.

He brings more than just defensive muscle — his presence would allow United’s more creative players greater freedom, and with prior Premier League experience, he would require little time to adapt.

According to Caught Offside, “Manchester United are continuing talks with their primary targets before making a move for the Portuguese international,” indicating that while United are weighing their options, their interest in Palhinha is very real.

A loan deal would suit United, but Bayern reportedly prefer a permanent transfer. As always, the financial terms will ultimately determine the outcome.
