Cameron Smith has gone viral after donning a suit during his final practice round ahead of the Masters.
The Australian star, in pursuit of his second major title and first green jacket at Augusta, was seen wearing a blue blazer over his polo shirt on Wednesday, just one day before the tournament tees off.
From Thursday through Sunday, the world’s top golfers will compete for the iconic green jacket, but Smith, a high-profile figure on the LIV Golf circuit, turned heads with his unorthodox attire during his final preparations.
Smith joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf in 2022 following his breakthrough major win at The Open Championship, where he famously edged out Rory McIlroy at St Andrews to claim the Claret Jug.
Since then, he has remained a strong contender at Augusta, finishing tied for sixth in 2023, tied for third in 2022, and runner-up in 2021.
Despite his consistent performances, FanDuel currently lists Smith at +5500 (55/1) to win the 2024 Masters, while defending champion Scottie Scheffler enters as the favorite.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is once again chasing his first major since 2014. The Northern Irishman acknowledged the emotional toll of near-misses, admitting this week he’s prepared to endure “heartbreak” once more in pursuit of the elusive victory.
‘Instinctually as human beings we hold back sometimes because of the fear of getting hurt, whether that’s a conscious decision or subconscious decision, and I think I was doing that on the golf course a little bit for a few years.
‘But once you go through that, once you go through those heartbreaks you get to a place where you remember how it feels and you wake up the next day and you’re like, “yeah, life goes on, it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be”.
‘It’s going through those times, especially in recent memory, where the last few years I’ve had chances to win some of the biggest golf tournaments in the world and it hasn’t quite happened. But life moves on. You dust yourself off and you go again.’
