Leeds United have emerged as one of the clubs interested in signing Burnley’s Mike Trésor during the upcoming winter transfer window.
The attacking midfielder, who has struggled with injury, made his season debut earlier this month, coming off the bench in Burnley’s FA Cup win over Reading.
According to Voetbal Nieuws, Trésor is keen to leave Burnley this January, and Leeds are among the clubs vying for his signature. Burnley, eager to recoup part of the €18m they spent on him in 2023, are open to offloading the 25-year-old.
Despite his recent struggles, Trésor is attracting significant interest. Leeds face competition from Anderlecht, KAA Gent, and Ajax, with all three clubs listing the Belgium international as a priority target. Notably, Daniel Farke’s side has ‘surprisingly emerged’ as a contender for the midfielder.
Ajax remains a strong contender, while Anderlecht and Gent are closely monitoring his situation, having already inquired about his availability. However, reports suggest Trésor favours a move to Ajax.
If Leeds hope to secure his services, they must convince Trésor to choose the Championship as his next destination.
Leeds United ace Wilfried Gnonto may have chance to fulfil Daniel Farke request vs Norwich City
Wilfried Gnonto has shared his excitement about reaching 100 appearances for Leeds United, though he likely hoped to mark the milestone with a start or a goal contribution.
Neither happened during his 14-minute cameo against Sheffield Wednesday, leaving him without a goal, assist, or Championship start in 2025 so far. In fact, Gnonto has started only one of Leeds’ last six league matches.
His most recent goal came against Middlesbrough on December 10, and he failed to score or assist during 90 minutes in Leeds’ FA Cup third-round match against League Two side Harrogate Town earlier this month.
Nevertheless, Daniel Farke spoke glowingly about Gnonto at Thorp Arch on Monday. “He has my trust and my backing,” the 48-year-old said.
“I don’t think there’s a winger or offensive player who has started more games than Willy Gnonto during the season, he has been involved in many starting line-ups. Overall, I am happy with his development as a person and as a player.
“He takes more responsibility. He is more mobile on the pitch and not static, much more likely and less predictable compared to last season. I like how he has developed as a player.”
However, there is a reason why he has not been getting as many minutes in recent weeks. “The only thing that is lacking a little bit at the moment is the end product, it’s something that he can add. Goals and assists,” Farke added.
“At the beginning of the season he was pretty much on it. The last few weeks I think he has also been a bit unlucky in a few situations there. This is the only thing that has to come back to his game.”
Farke emphasized that Wilfried Gnonto is a “top teammate” but acknowledged the stiff competition he faces for a starting role. Manor Solomon has been in excellent form recently, while Largie Ramazani has scored twice in as many games.
However, Solomon is expected to miss Wednesday’s clash with Norwich City due to a hamstring injury. Ramazani appears to be the frontrunner to replace him on the left wing, but Gnonto could still be in contention for a starting spot.
Brenden Aaronson is also doubtful for the midweek match after sustaining an ankle knock against Sheffield Wednesday. While Farke is “carefully optimistic” about Aaronson’s availability, the manager might rest him with Monday’s game against Burnley in mind.
Gnonto has yet to start as a number 10 this season, though Farke has identified him as a potential option for the role. If both Solomon and Aaronson are unavailable, Gnonto may be called upon.
Joel Piroe is another candidate for the attacking midfield position, but keeping Piroe in his natural striker role while positioning Gnonto behind him could prove more effective if the manager truly trusts the Italian international.
Norwich have struggled defensively, conceding in seven of their last eight matches and managing only two clean sheets since early December. Injuries and player departures have further unsettled the Canaries.
Whether starting or coming off the bench, Gnonto will see this as an opportunity to improve on his four goals and five assists this season. With only one goal and no assists in his last 11 games, he is overdue for a strong performance.
