Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot says the team is willing to explore trade options for quarterback Kirk Cousins—if the right opportunity comes along.

However, any potential deal would require full agreement from Cousins, his agent Mike McCartney, the Falcons, and the team acquiring him.

Cousins joined the Falcons in March 2024 on a four-year, $180 million fully guaranteed contract. Despite the high expectations, his 2024 season didn’t go as planned.

He threw 16 interceptions in just 14 games—a career high—and was eventually replaced by rookie Michael Penix Jr. Even though he was healthy by the end of the season, his performance fell short of what the team had hoped for.

Although the Falcons are open to moving him, they’re also fine with keeping him on the roster, even as a backup. Cousins is due $27.5 million in 2025, with another $10 million becoming guaranteed if he remains on the team past March 17.

This hefty price tag makes trade negotiations tricky, as many teams are hesitant to take on such a large contract.

Adding to the complexity is Cousins’ no-trade clause, which gives him control over where he could be sent.

While teams like the Vikings, Steelers, and Browns have been linked to him, there haven’t been any serious talks yet.

For now, the Falcons appear content to wait for a suitable offer and are prepared to retain Cousins as a highly paid backup if a trade doesn’t materialize.
