The NFL Draft is fast approaching, and with no third-round pick currently in hand, the Falcons must make the most of their first two selections.

Holding the 15th and 46th overall picks, general manager Terry Fontenot has a crucial opportunity to land two players who can contribute immediately in 2025—something he has struggled to achieve during his tenure in Atlanta.

The last time both the Falcons’ first- and second-round picks became instant starters was in 2023, when they selected Bijan Robinson at No. 8 and Matthew Bergeron at No. 38.

Luckily, this year’s draft class is considered one of the deepest in recent memory. In ESPN’s latest mock draft—where Mel Kiper and Field Yates alternated selections—the Falcons appear to be on the right track.

Atlanta Falcons

Yates’ pick: Mike Green, Edge, Marshall

“The Falcons registered the second-fewest sacks in the league last season (31), so edge rusher is still a problem even after signing Leonard Floyd. Green is explosive, powerful and pro-ready, and he should be able to get pressure on opponent QBs right away. He led the FBS with 17 sacks last season.”

Among Falcons fans, Mike Green seems to be the favorite first-round target—and it’s easy to understand why. The team has recorded the fewest sacks in the NFL over the last five, ten, and even twenty years. So, selecting the nation’s sack leader would definitely resonate with the fanbase.

Green gained attention after a viral clip from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, where he bulldozed a Power 5 offensive tackle. He brings a level of intensity and edge that Atlanta’s defense has been lacking for quite some time. If the Falcons can secure a consistent double-digit sack threat, it could elevate the performance of the entire defense—and Green looks like he could be that difference-maker.

Atlanta Falcons

Kiper’s pick: Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame

“Morrison is coming off a hip injury, but he has really good press coverage traits and picked off nine passes in three seasons. The Falcons could slot him opposite A.J. Terrell.”

Although the Falcons brought back Mike Hughes and Dee Alford to strengthen the cornerback group, they still need another starting-caliber option—whether that’s on the outside or in the slot. If Morrison can handle duties in the slot, that would allow Hughes to stay on the boundary, or the other way around.

Counting on Alford to return to his 2023 form without Jimmy Lake around feels like a risky bet. If Atlanta wants to see real defensive progress under Jeff Ulbrich, they’ll need to equip him with the right personnel.
