Emma Raducanu recently opened up about being let down by individuals she once trusted, a revelation that explains why she now tends to be more guarded and selective about who she allows into her life.
She is currently in Rome competing in the Italian Open, her ninth tournament of the 2025 season. The year has presented its challenges, with her best showing so far being a quarterfinal finish in Miami. She’ll be aiming for a stronger performance on clay this week.
In an interview with The Guardian before the tournament, the British player reflected on her strong independence.
She acknowledged that life is far from easy and shared that past disappointments have taught her to be cautious about who she places her trust in.
“I’m someone who keeps things to myself and it takes a lot for me to open up,” she said. “I haven’t really opened up to many people in my life, truly, but the ones that I really trust, I do. And the thing is with me, once I let someone in, I let them in fully and I care for them so much, and I have been burnt a few times.”
Emma Raducanu continued:
“A few people who I’ve really trusted have surprised me, but I guess that’s life, and I still have some great people around me who I really trust, and I’m working on it.”
“I mean, part of me doesn’t like talking too much about any problems, because it makes it into a bigger problem. So I think now I’m learning to just accept the day as it comes and just choose discipline over how I feel,” she added.
At just 22, Raducanu seems to have learned a valuable life lesson—one that has contributed to her personal growth and helped her make wiser, more considered choices.
Emma Raducanu to kick off Italian Open campaign against Maya Joint
Emma Raducanu is set to begin her 2025 Italian Open campaign with a first-round match against Australia’s Maya Joint, an opponent she hasn’t previously encountered on the WTA Tour.
She’s approaching the match with a positive mindset, seeing it as a “fresh start” to her season. Raducanu remains hopeful, aiming to take things one step at a time and gain some rhythm on the clay.
“It is exciting, it does feel like a bit of a fresh start with the way I am approaching everything, with the people I have around, with my mindset and outlook,” she told Sky Sports.
“I feel more optimistic, I feel pretty positive about things going forward. I’m just taking it day by day and trying to stay consistent,” she added.
