Dominic Thiem bombarded with disgusting abuse after latest loss to top 200 player
Dominic Thiem faced both on-court misery and a barrage of criticism on social media following another loss at a Challenger event to a player ranked within the top 200.
Lukas Neumayer defeated Thiem convincingly with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, advancing to the Quarter-Finals in Kadar.
Subsequently, Thiem withdrew from a Challenger 125 event in Naples and is scheduled to return at the Estoril Open.
Earlier, he hinted at retirement if significant progress wasn't made, a sentiment echoed by many of the commenters on his social media posts after his recent loss.
They urged him to retire from the sport immediately, questioning how he ever achieved Grand Slam success.
Thiem's performance hasn't been the same since his return from wrist surgery, despite seeking guidance from Borna Coric's former coach.
This latest setback will likely prompt a period of introspection for Thiem during his break from competition in Naples.
"What are you waiting for Domi, you are embarrassing yourself and your team. Maybe with this result you just let it go, it's over you won't achieve anything else," one comment wrote. "Your mentality and your tennis isn't there and won't come back. Knowing when to retire is important too, you are just a shade on court."
"It's time to retire Thiem, don't break our heart again," another wrote. "I cannot believe that you won a Grand Slam *clown emoji* retire."
Dominic Thiem is being bombarded with negative, disgusting comments after his loss in Zadar.
Sad to see him being treated like this.
No respect for what he’s achieved, let alone for what a good person he is. pic.twitter.com/OMqM3KI9BF — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) March 21, 2024
