Celtic are prepared to let James Forrest decide his own future as his current contract approaches its expiry this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The club plan to hold talks with the long-serving winger about a new deal, but only if Forrest is happy to continue in his current role at Celtic Park. If, however, he feels the need to move elsewhere in search of more regular football, Celtic are willing to step aside and allow him to do so.

At this stage of his career, Forrest is viewed as a squad player, but the club would be more than happy to keep him on out of appreciation for his outstanding 15 years of service.

Martin O’Neill’s side are pushing hard for the Premiership title in the second half of the campaign, and the 34-year-old remains an important part of the experienced manager’s plans.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider on Wednesday that O’Neill is well positioned to finalise late signings before the February 2 transfer deadline. However, any potential arrivals are unlikely to impact players the manager still believes can contribute.

Forrest has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season and, despite starting just twice in the league, he continues to be a valued figure within the squad.

Celtic are locked in a rare three-way title battle with Rangers and Hearts, and O’Neill will rely heavily on the experience within his squad during the run-in. Forrest, a 13-time Premiership winner, understands better than most what it takes to deliver when it matters most.

While he may no longer be an automatic starter, Forrest is expected to play a meaningful role between now and the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Arne Engels has no intention of forcing a move away from Celtic despite interest from RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga club are keen to bring the midfielder back to Germany, but Celtic have made it clear they will not consider any offers.

Engels is understood to be settled in Glasgow and fully focused on the title race, with “no chance” of him leaving Celtic Park before Monday’s transfer deadline. His future now looks secure until at least the summer.
