Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is already preparing for the January transfer window. With the team performing well domestically and remaining in the hunt for Champions League qualification, it’s no surprise that Rodgers is aiming to strengthen his squad to cope with a busy fixture schedule.
In recent months, Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden and Burnley’s Josh Brownhill have been linked as potential signings for Celtic.
In a surprising turn, Jonjoe Kenny has been speculated to make an odd return to Parkhead. Despite performing solidly for Hertha Berlin this season, a move in January seems highly unlikely following his unsuccessful 2021 loan stint.
However, this rumor highlights that the transfer window opens in just three weeks, with Celtic potentially securing one of their targets at a discounted price, according to reports.
Celtic’s pursuit of Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diawara
Earlier this week, 67 Hail Hail reported that Celtic are still interested in Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diawara after unsuccessful attempts to sign the 19-year-old in the summer.
The Bhoys previously had a loan offer with an €8 million buy option rejected, and the deal stalled after Arne Engels joined the club. However, Foot Mercato now reports that Lyon would be willing to sell Diawara for €4-5 million (£3.2 million-£4.1 million), which represents a significant discount given his limited involvement, having made just four appearances this season.
Lyon’s financial struggles have played a role in their decision to lower the asking price. The outlet adds that the club would welcome the sale, particularly after their provisional relegation to Ligue 2 and ongoing scrutiny from French football authorities.
Celtic could land another transfer bargain in Diawara
Although Celtic spent over £30 million in the summer, Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan have proven that value for money can still be found, having arrived for a combined £4.5 million.
Diawara would cost slightly more than the two, but he could bring youthful energy to the team in the second half of the season, as the Bhoys look to secure more trophies and progress in Europe.
While it’s difficult to draw firm conclusions about the youngster, given his limited involvement in an otherwise talented Lyon squad this season, Brendan Rodgers is known for his excellent judgment of players. As such, it’s reasonable to believe he would pass the test.
