Bournemouth ‘formally negotiating’ for player – Stepped ahead of competition for January arrival

Bournemouth are reportedly in formal negotiations to sign Lanús left-back Julio Soler, with a potential move planned for the January transfer window.

Journalist Uriel Lugt reports that Lanús is already aware of Bournemouth’s offer and is preparing for the possibility of the deal progressing.

Soler, 19, has been linked to the Premier League several times in recent months. Liverpool expressed interest back in August, and a report in late November placed both Liverpool and Manchester United in contention for his signature, prompting River Plate to intensify their pursuit of the talented defender.

However, Bournemouth now appear to have taken the lead, with Lugt stating that negotiations are ongoing, primarily involving the player’s representatives rather than the club itself at this stage.

If the talks progress, the plan is for Soler to make the move to the Premier League this January. While the transfer window is still weeks away, Bournemouth seems to be ahead in the race for the promising young full-back.

West Ham United’s £46m January transfer window predicted with Leeds United and Bournemouth deals

West Ham United had an eventful summer transfer window as they geared up for Julen Lopetegui’s inaugural season at the London Stadium.

The Hammers completed several notable signings, including Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug for £22 million, alongside Max Kilman from Wolves and Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United. Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka also joined in a £14 million deal, while Ligue 1 talents Carlos Soler and Jean-Clair Todibo arrived on season-long loans.

The new arrivals have experienced varying levels of success during the first half of the campaign, raising questions about potential reinforcements for Lopetegui in January. Using Football Manager 2024 to simulate the rest of the season, predictions revealed intriguing developments.

Departures

Three seasoned players departed the club in January, all in the final six months of their contracts. Aaron Cresswell moved to Bournemouth, and Michail Antonio joined Brentford, with both deals collectively bringing in £3 million. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski headed to Saudi Arabia, signing with Damac for £1 million.

Although Vladimir Coufal and Danny Ings attracted interest, they ultimately stayed at the club, signing one-year extensions. Similarly, Arsenal and Juventus showed interest in Lucas Paquetá, while Celtic eyed Tomáš Souček, but both players remained with West Ham.

January Signings

Lopetegui made just two additions during the winter window:

Illan Meslier – The Leeds United goalkeeper was secured for £22 million to take over as the Hammers’ first choice between the posts.
Aleksandar Mitrović – The former Fulham striker returned to the Premier League after West Ham agreed to a £20 million deal with Al-Hilal.
Additionally, a pre-contract agreement was reached with Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes, who will join the Hammers on a free transfer in the summer.

Season Highlights and Performance

Despite these changes, West Ham’s season was relatively uneventful. Their FA Cup journey ended in the fourth round with a 1-0 loss to Championship side Middlesbrough. However, they achieved a standout 3-0 victory at Anfield against Liverpool, capitalizing on Virgil van Dijk’s early red card. Goals from Mitrović, Souček, and Kilman sealed what was undoubtedly their best result of the season.

The Hammers concluded the campaign in 11th place, capping off a season marked by mediocrity but punctuated with moments of promise.

David Sullivan has just made a rod for his own back with major new West Ham transfer leak

David Sullivan has just made a rod for his own back with major new West Ham transfer leak

David Sullivan has regained control of West Ham’s transfer dealings this January, and many fans are already noticing the shift.

Frustrated with how Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui spent £155m in the summer, Sullivan, the majority owner, has taken back full control of signings.

While it was always Sullivan and the board who had the final say on deals suggested by Steidten, Lopetegui, and David Moyes, Sullivan made it clear that he is now in charge once again, with input from Steidten and the manager.

This move has divided opinion among West Ham supporters, especially with some of the players the club is reportedly targeting.

While Sullivan’s return to the transfer scene invites potential criticism, it’s worth noting that he was responsible for securing one of the summer’s standout signings, Crysencio Summerville.

The Dutch winger has impressed fans with his exciting performances, and at just 22, he fits the profile of the type of player many expected West Ham to build around. Best of all, the Hammers managed to sign Summerville for a reasonable £26m.

Now, Sullivan will be judged on what he accomplishes in this window. The top priorities are bringing in a striker and a midfielder, with a potential need for a defender depending on the status of Jean-Clair Todibo’s abductor injury.

Over the past week, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of strikers linked with the club, prompting some cynics to claim that Sullivan is resorting to a “scattergun approach.”

Ultimately, West Ham’s success this month will come down to who they manage to sign, not the noise surrounding it. Heading into January, the club’s owners made it clear that West Ham is nearing its PSR limit and would need to sell players in order to buy.

This has led to an increased focus on loan moves, with many reports indicating that West Ham is looking to strengthen without exceeding financial constraints.

“We are up to our FFP maximum,” the senior London Stadium contact told Hammers News.

“So unless we increase income or move players there is very little room to do much.

“But never say never.”

Several players, including Edson Alvarez, Vladimir Coufal, Guido Rodriguez, and others, have been linked with moves away from West Ham. Niclas Fullkrug was also rumored to be on his way out until a hamstring injury sidelined him for the next three months.

Against this backdrop, fans were surprised by transfer news that surfaced yesterday.

David Sullivan has found himself in a tough spot after a major West Ham transfer leak. Football correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed that West Ham had made a fresh £40m bid for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.

However, Bailey later informed Hammers News that West Ham’s offer was rejected, as Villa is asking for between £65-70m to even consider selling the Colombian forward.

This asking price is £30m more than what West Ham could have secured Duran for in the summer before Tim Steidten opted to allocate funds for other signings, including Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.

Interestingly, Bailey also mentioned that Duran himself would be open to a move, as he is eager to secure a first-choice role.

Since news of the Duran bid broke, Sullivan has confirmed the move to Claret and Hugh.

“We’ve tried, but PSG and a few foreign clubs have outbid us,” the site was told.

“We never mention to supporters failed bids as it frustrates them.”

Havertz's wife shares threats after Arsenal loss

Kai Havertz’s wife, Sophia, revealed the abusive messages she received on social media following Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

On Monday, she posted two updates on her Instagram story, including one in which someone threatened to “slaughter” her unborn baby.

Arsenal were eliminated from the cup after losing to United in a penalty shootout. Havertz, the German striker, missed a chance to secure the win at the Emirates Stadium when he fired over from a close range and later had his penalty saved during the shootout.

Sophia Havertz voiced her outrage over the vile abuse she faced after the match.

“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” she posted.

In response to the threat to her baby, she posted: “I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…”

Football authorities and law enforcement have been working to address online abuse directed at players.

Last year, the Football Association of England announced it was allocating approximately £25,000 ($32,000) to support police efforts in tackling such incidents during the European Championship.

During the 2021 Euros, England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho faced racial abuse on social media after missing penalties in a shootout loss to Italy in the final.

FIFA, the global governing body, has implemented a Social Media Protection Service (SMPS) to safeguard players, teams, and officials from online harassment by ensuring their social media accounts remain free from hate.

According to SMPS, during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, 20% of the players were targeted with discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages, with about half of these being anti-gay, sexual, or sexist in nature.

West Ham make bid for £60m Aston Villa star who is open to leaving

West Ham make bid for £60m Aston Villa star who is open to leaving

Aston Villa’s Duran, who has scored 12 goals in 26 appearances this season, has been on West Ham’s radar for quite some time.

Despite recently signing a new contract at Villa Park, rumors surrounding his future persist.

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly explored a swap deal involving the Colombian striker, whose potential has attracted interest from clubs across Europe.

Meanwhile, West Ham, eager to strengthen their attacking options this month, submitted a bid for Duran last week.

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa rejected West Ham’s offer, which was significantly below their valuation.

While West Ham previously considered signing Duran in the summer but refused to exceed £30 million, their latest bid surpassed that amount.

However, it still fell far short of Villa’s demands, with the club reportedly valuing the 21-year-old at over £60 million.

Duran is keen to secure a role as a first-choice striker, making him open to a move away from Villa Park. He would be interested in joining West Ham and playing at the London Stadium.

In December, following a Champions League goal against RB Leipzig, Duran expressed his happiness at being a Villa player and acknowledged the healthy competition with Ollie Watkins. While this dynamic benefits the club, it may be less favorable for Duran’s personal ambitions behind the scenes.

Speaking in the wake of links away, Duran said: “I’m just happy to be here. I actually love the competition I have going with Ollie Watkins.

“When it’s my turn, I will step up, and hopefully I can score and help the team.”

Although Duran has scored seven Premier League goals for Aston Villa this season, he has only managed to secure four league starts.

If he were to move to East London, the Colombian would likely step in as Graham Potter’s first-choice striker, particularly with Niclas Fullkrug sidelined by an untimely injury.
