Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has provided a comprehensive fitness update ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Premiership match against Dundee United at Tannadice.
As the Hoops aim to continue their strong domestic form following their thrilling League Cup victory over Rangers, Rodgers is dealing with a few selection challenges caused by injuries and illness.
A primary concern is the fitness of Alistair Johnston, who pushed through the pain to feature in Celtic’s cup win despite sustaining a hip injury during the Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb.
Rodgers has emphasized the importance of exercising caution with the Canadian full-back’s recovery.
“So, Alistair Johnson, we just need to have an eye on him as well over these next couple of days. If he misses out this weekend, he’ll be fine for the next game. But we just managed that injury that he had.”
Should Alistair Johnston be unavailable, Anthony Ralston is likely to take over at right-back. Ralston has demonstrated his reliability as a deputy this season, with his composed display during the League Cup Final penalty shootout victory highlighting his readiness to step up when needed.
Rodgers also noted that a bout of illness has impacted parts of the squad, which could further influence his selection decisions for the trip to Tannadice.
“We’ve had a few bugs and bits and pieces going about. So, hopefully, they can tidy themselves up over the next couple of days and we have most of our players available for the weekend.”
With a busy festive schedule on the horizon, Rodgers will be eager for the illness to pass swiftly to minimize any further setbacks as Celtic look to solidify their lead at the top of the table.
This update comes alongside the news that James Forrest is set to miss up to six weeks due to an injury sustained in the League Cup Final. The 33-year-old winger, spotted wearing a moon boot after the match, adds to Celtic’s challenges by limiting their options on the wings.
