Fabrizio Romano confirms £50m Arsenal ‘target’ has made major transfer decision
Arsenal are quickly back in action this week as they continue to challenge on all fronts under Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners will face Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night, before shifting their focus to the third round of the FA Cup, with Manchester United visiting the Emirates Stadium.
Manchester United enters the match with renewed confidence, having halted Liverpool’s momentum in the Premier League title race with a 2-2 draw at Anfield—just a day after Arsenal could only secure a 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Arsenal have been dealing with several injury setbacks, including an extended absence for Bukayo Saka, while Kai Havertz has missed the last two games due to illness.
Ethan Nwaneri was substituted at half-time against Brighton after scoring the opening goal for Arsenal. Arteta commented on the situation over the weekend.
“Really bad news because I think we’ve lost him (Nwaneri), we had to take him off at half-time with some muscular issues.”
Arteta is willing to strengthen his squad in January, but the Gunners have faced an early setback in their efforts to enhance their attacking options, as multiple reports indicate that Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has verbally agreed to a new contract with the Premier League side.
Cunha has been rumored to be a target for a move to North London for several months. Football Insider recently reported that Arsenal were considering a January transfer for the 25-year-old, who has stood out as a bright spot in what has been a challenging season for Wolves.
It was reported late last month that a potential deal could range between £50m and £60m. Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid on an initial loan in January 2023 and has been a major success at Molineux since the £44m move was made permanent in the summer of 2023.
Speaking about potential transfers this month, Arteta has previously said: “Let’s see. If there’s an opportunity we will look at it. Let’s see how we get there. Hopefully, the squad is going to be in a much healthier position than it is right now, but who knows? We are prepared if we need to do something, we’re capable of doing something, but then that transfer window is very tricky and difficult to control. The opportunities are very limited but we’ll be there.”
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has reported that a new contract is close for Cunha, whose current deal runs out in the summer of 2027. He wrote on X: “Wolves have agreed on new deal with Matheus Cunha! Deal verbally in place for Brazilian star to extend the contract with salary improved. Despite interest from several clubs, Cunha’s set to sign as soon as official documents are checked/approved.”
Cunha has scored 26 goals and provided 13 assists in 76 appearances for Wolves, including 10 goals and four assists this season as the club fights against Premier League relegation. He will miss the next two matches after receiving a ban from the FA.
A statement reasoned: “Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two games and fined £80,000 following the Premier League fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday 14 December 2024. The forward was charged with misconduct and it was alleged that he acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission.”
Fabrizio Romano tells Arsenal fans to ‘watch out’ for potential attacking signing from Dutch league
Arsenal are reportedly looking to strengthen their attacking options this month, with a move for a new winger on the cards.
Feyenoord’s Brazilian winger, Igor Paixão, has emerged as a player of considerable interest to the Gunners.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is one of the top clubs monitoring the 24-year-old, whose performances in the Eredivisie have made him one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
Paixão’s versatility is a standout feature, as he excels on both the left and right wings. His attributes include explosive pace, excellent dribbling, and a strong ability to create and convert chances, making him a valuable addition to any attacking setup. His contributions have been crucial to Feyenoord’s domestic success, and it’s no surprise that a club of Arsenal’s stature is taking notice.
For Arsenal, Paixão’s potential acquisition could not come at a better time. Injuries to key players have left Mikel Arteta’s side short on options in wide attacking positions. While the Gunners have shown resilience in maintaining their form, adding a player like Paixão could significantly strengthen their attacking depth and help them stay competitive across all competitions.
At 24, Paixão is at a point in his career where he is ready to step up to a higher level. A move to Arsenal would provide him the opportunity to test himself in one of the world’s toughest leagues, while also contributing to a team with ambitions of winning silverware. For Arsenal, the signing would align with their strategy of bringing in young, talented players capable of making an immediate impact while offering long-term value.
Although formal negotiations have not been confirmed, Romano’s report indicates that Arsenal are serious about their interest. The club’s scouting network has been closely monitoring Paixão, and it’s believed the winger could be available for a reasonable fee, making him an attractive target for the January or summer transfer window.
With nine more games scheduled over the next 30 days, Arsenal must act quickly to add depth to their squad.

David Sullivan has just made a rod for his own back with major new West Ham transfer leak
David Sullivan has regained control of West Ham’s transfer dealings this January, and many fans are already noticing the shift.
Frustrated with how Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui spent £155m in the summer, Sullivan, the majority owner, has taken back full control of signings.
While it was always Sullivan and the board who had the final say on deals suggested by Steidten, Lopetegui, and David Moyes, Sullivan made it clear that he is now in charge once again, with input from Steidten and the manager.
This move has divided opinion among West Ham supporters, especially with some of the players the club is reportedly targeting.
While Sullivan’s return to the transfer scene invites potential criticism, it’s worth noting that he was responsible for securing one of the summer’s standout signings, Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger has impressed fans with his exciting performances, and at just 22, he fits the profile of the type of player many expected West Ham to build around. Best of all, the Hammers managed to sign Summerville for a reasonable £26m.
Now, Sullivan will be judged on what he accomplishes in this window. The top priorities are bringing in a striker and a midfielder, with a potential need for a defender depending on the status of Jean-Clair Todibo’s abductor injury.
Over the past week, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of strikers linked with the club, prompting some cynics to claim that Sullivan is resorting to a “scattergun approach.”
Ultimately, West Ham’s success this month will come down to who they manage to sign, not the noise surrounding it. Heading into January, the club’s owners made it clear that West Ham is nearing its PSR limit and would need to sell players in order to buy.
This has led to an increased focus on loan moves, with many reports indicating that West Ham is looking to strengthen without exceeding financial constraints.
“We are up to our FFP maximum,” the senior London Stadium contact told Hammers News.
“So unless we increase income or move players there is very little room to do much.
“But never say never.”
Several players, including Edson Alvarez, Vladimir Coufal, Guido Rodriguez, and others, have been linked with moves away from West Ham. Niclas Fullkrug was also rumored to be on his way out until a hamstring injury sidelined him for the next three months.
Against this backdrop, fans were surprised by transfer news that surfaced yesterday.
David Sullivan has found himself in a tough spot after a major West Ham transfer leak. Football correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed that West Ham had made a fresh £40m bid for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.
However, Bailey later informed Hammers News that West Ham’s offer was rejected, as Villa is asking for between £65-70m to even consider selling the Colombian forward.
This asking price is £30m more than what West Ham could have secured Duran for in the summer before Tim Steidten opted to allocate funds for other signings, including Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.
Interestingly, Bailey also mentioned that Duran himself would be open to a move, as he is eager to secure a first-choice role.
Since news of the Duran bid broke, Sullivan has confirmed the move to Claret and Hugh.
“We’ve tried, but PSG and a few foreign clubs have outbid us,” the site was told.
“We never mention to supporters failed bids as it frustrates them.”

Havertz’s wife shares threats after Arsenal loss
Kai Havertz’s wife, Sophia, revealed the abusive messages she received on social media following Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
On Monday, she posted two updates on her Instagram story, including one in which someone threatened to “slaughter” her unborn baby.
Arsenal were eliminated from the cup after losing to United in a penalty shootout. Havertz, the German striker, missed a chance to secure the win at the Emirates Stadium when he fired over from a close range and later had his penalty saved during the shootout.
Sophia Havertz voiced her outrage over the vile abuse she faced after the match.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” she posted.
In response to the threat to her baby, she posted: “I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…”
Football authorities and law enforcement have been working to address online abuse directed at players.
Last year, the Football Association of England announced it was allocating approximately £25,000 ($32,000) to support police efforts in tackling such incidents during the European Championship.
During the 2021 Euros, England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho faced racial abuse on social media after missing penalties in a shootout loss to Italy in the final.
FIFA, the global governing body, has implemented a Social Media Protection Service (SMPS) to safeguard players, teams, and officials from online harassment by ensuring their social media accounts remain free from hate.
According to SMPS, during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, 20% of the players were targeted with discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages, with about half of these being anti-gay, sexual, or sexist in nature.

West Ham make bid for £60m Aston Villa star who is open to leaving
Aston Villa’s Duran, who has scored 12 goals in 26 appearances this season, has been on West Ham’s radar for quite some time.
Despite recently signing a new contract at Villa Park, rumors surrounding his future persist.
Paris Saint-Germain reportedly explored a swap deal involving the Colombian striker, whose potential has attracted interest from clubs across Europe.
Meanwhile, West Ham, eager to strengthen their attacking options this month, submitted a bid for Duran last week.
According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa rejected West Ham’s offer, which was significantly below their valuation.
While West Ham previously considered signing Duran in the summer but refused to exceed £30 million, their latest bid surpassed that amount.
However, it still fell far short of Villa’s demands, with the club reportedly valuing the 21-year-old at over £60 million.
Duran is keen to secure a role as a first-choice striker, making him open to a move away from Villa Park. He would be interested in joining West Ham and playing at the London Stadium.
In December, following a Champions League goal against RB Leipzig, Duran expressed his happiness at being a Villa player and acknowledged the healthy competition with Ollie Watkins. While this dynamic benefits the club, it may be less favorable for Duran’s personal ambitions behind the scenes.
Speaking in the wake of links away, Duran said: “I’m just happy to be here. I actually love the competition I have going with Ollie Watkins.
“When it’s my turn, I will step up, and hopefully I can score and help the team.”
Although Duran has scored seven Premier League goals for Aston Villa this season, he has only managed to secure four league starts.
If he were to move to East London, the Colombian would likely step in as Graham Potter’s first-choice striker, particularly with Niclas Fullkrug sidelined by an untimely injury.
