Player Exit Talks Intensify as Arteta Shares Key Update – report
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal face important decisions during the January transfer window, with both potential arrivals and departures on the horizon for the North London club in the coming weeks.
A strong January will be crucial for Arsenal to stay in the title race, and their success will depend not only on their on-field performances but also on their actions off the pitch.
Currently sitting second in the Premier League after 19 games, the Gunners trail leaders Liverpool by six points. However, Arne Slot’s side, who lead the table, have a game in hand and remain favorites to clinch the championship.
Arteta bolstered Arsenal’s squad in the summer, signing players like Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori for substantial fees. Yet, with key players like Bukayo Saka and Ben White sidelined due to injuries, additional reinforcements may be necessary.
The squad could also see further departures, as Arteta looks to refine his team for the latter part of the season. Mirror Football brings you the latest updates from North London.
While Arteta has downplayed the idea of a major spending spree, he hasn’t ruled out making moves. After a late attempt to sign Raheem Sterling at the end of the summer window, the Arsenal manager remains open to conducting business if opportunities arise.
“I don’t know. The focus is on the players that we have,” he said on Friday. “If there is somebody in the market that we can afford and we believe they will have a real impact on the team then we have to be open for that possibility always.
“At the moment, the focus is on what we have. That market is much more limited than the one in the summer.”
Celtic have reportedly opened discussions with Kieran Tierney regarding a potential pre-contract agreement, according to BBC Sport.
The Scotland left-back, who departed the Glasgow club for Arsenal in 2019, seems unlikely to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium beyond this season.
Tierney was close to leaving Arsenal during the summer after spending the previous season on loan at Real Sociedad. However, an injury sustained while on international duty at Euro 2024 halted those plans.
The defender recently made his first appearance for Arsenal in over 500 days during a Carabao Cup match against Crystal Palace.
Despite this, it doesn’t appear to signal a long-term resurgence at the club, with Tierney potentially set to become the Gunners’ first summer departure.
Thomas Partey and Jorginho are entering the final months of their contracts and are now eligible to engage with potential overseas suitors.
While both players might still choose to extend their time in North London, Arsenal’s manager remained non-committal about their futures.
“It’s close communication with them, what their idea is, what they want to do, and what are their intentions,” Arteta told reporters. He indicated pre-contract exits were possible, but had no doubts about his squad’s commitment to the cause.
“All the players that are here, they want to focus on performing and impacting the team and if something happens there then we will assess it,” Arteta added.
Arsenal team news: Predicted XI vs Brighton as Havertz, Rice and Partey calls made
Arsenal face a must-win match as they visit Brighton tonight, aiming to maintain pressure on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
Their comeback victory over Brentford on New Year’s Day reduced the gap to six points, though the Gunners have played one more game than their title rivals.
Mikel Arteta is navigating the challenge of Bukayo Saka’s long-term absence alongside other injury issues ahead of the 5:30 pm kick-off at the American Express Stadium.
With three points being essential, Express Sport examines how the Arsenal manager might set up his team.
Arsenal’s predicted XI against Brighton (4-2-3-1)
Goalkeeper: David Raya
Arsenal, alongside Liverpool, boast the best defensive record in the league this season, having conceded only 17 goals. However, goalkeeper David Raya had a close call against Brentford, nearly turning Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot into his own net before scrambling back to clear it off the line.
Had that effort gone in, it would have put Brentford 2-0 ahead and left Arsenal facing an uphill battle. Fortunately for the Gunners, both Raya and the team managed to recover, with the Spaniard expected to retain his starting spot this weekend.
Defence: Partey, Saliba, Magalhaes, Calafiori
As if the Bukayo Saka situation wasn’t challenging enough for Arteta, he now faces a defensive dilemma. Right-back Jurrien Timber is sidelined due to suspension, and on Friday, Arteta confirmed that Takehiro Tomiyasu has yet to return to full training.
With Ben White also out long-term, Arsenal may need to deploy Thomas Partey as a temporary full-back once again. Another possibility is shifting William Saliba across and bringing Riccardo Calafiori into the center, though Arteta has been hesitant to disrupt the strong partnership between Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.
Midfield: Odegaard, Rice, Merino
Declan Rice was only brought on as a second-half substitute at Brentford, but Arteta explained that leaving his record-signing out of the starting lineup was a precaution to manage his workload. He is expected to return to the starting XI tonight, especially with Partey likely to switch roles.
Captain Martin Ødegaard has maintained a key presence since his return from injury, while Mikel Merino seems to be settling in after a slow start to his career in England. He scored on Wednesday to give his team the lead, marking just his second Premier League goal.
Forwards: Havertz, Jesus, Martinelli
Arteta anticipates that Kai Havertz will be available again after missing the Brentford win due to illness, which could see 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri return to the bench.
A month ago, it seemed unthinkable to consider Gabriel Jesus as undroppable, but he has now scored six goals in four matches, responding strongly to calls for his sale this month.
Gabriel Martinelli is also in good form, with two goals in three games, and is likely to retain his place. With Raheem Sterling still unavailable, players like Nwaneri and Leandro Trossard could play crucial roles off the bench in the second half of the season.

Unai Emery: Two Aston Villa deals are ‘close’
Unai Emery has confirmed that Aston Villa is nearing the completion of a £21 million deal to sign Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.
The Netherlands international is set to join for an initial fee of £19 million, a move that will also facilitate Jaden Philogene’s transfer to Ipswich for £21 million.
Villa remains interested in further signings to bolster their squad for the second half of the season. However, Emery acknowledged that new additions would depend on player departures to ensure compliance with profit and sustainability regulations.
Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza is reportedly on Villa’s radar, though a potential transfer of Diego Carlos to Fenerbahce appears to be falling through.
“We are in the transfer window and we are trying to do some movements,” said Emery. “One of those movements is the possibility to sign Malen. In case Malen signs for us, it is close, we have to leave one player, which is Jaden [Philogene].
“We are alert and we want to always be ready to improve the squad with the players and, of course, sometimes some players want to leave us for different circumstances as well.
“We are moving forward with some circumstances like I am telling you from today until the last day of the window.
“If we are changing one player, Malen and Jaden, that’s the first. Maybe two or three players more, we can do another deal of some players leaving and some players joining us.”
Diego Carlos will miss Wednesday’s match against Everton due to injury. Ross Barkley (calf), John McGinn (hamstring), and Pau Torres (foot) are also sidelined.
Among the three, McGinn is the nearest to making a comeback but is expected to remain out for approximately another week.

David Sullivan has just made a rod for his own back with major new West Ham transfer leak
David Sullivan has regained control of West Ham’s transfer dealings this January, and many fans are already noticing the shift.
Frustrated with how Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui spent £155m in the summer, Sullivan, the majority owner, has taken back full control of signings.
While it was always Sullivan and the board who had the final say on deals suggested by Steidten, Lopetegui, and David Moyes, Sullivan made it clear that he is now in charge once again, with input from Steidten and the manager.
This move has divided opinion among West Ham supporters, especially with some of the players the club is reportedly targeting.
While Sullivan’s return to the transfer scene invites potential criticism, it’s worth noting that he was responsible for securing one of the summer’s standout signings, Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger has impressed fans with his exciting performances, and at just 22, he fits the profile of the type of player many expected West Ham to build around. Best of all, the Hammers managed to sign Summerville for a reasonable £26m.
Now, Sullivan will be judged on what he accomplishes in this window. The top priorities are bringing in a striker and a midfielder, with a potential need for a defender depending on the status of Jean-Clair Todibo’s abductor injury.
Over the past week, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of strikers linked with the club, prompting some cynics to claim that Sullivan is resorting to a “scattergun approach.”
Ultimately, West Ham’s success this month will come down to who they manage to sign, not the noise surrounding it. Heading into January, the club’s owners made it clear that West Ham is nearing its PSR limit and would need to sell players in order to buy.
This has led to an increased focus on loan moves, with many reports indicating that West Ham is looking to strengthen without exceeding financial constraints.
“We are up to our FFP maximum,” the senior London Stadium contact told Hammers News.
“So unless we increase income or move players there is very little room to do much.
“But never say never.”
Several players, including Edson Alvarez, Vladimir Coufal, Guido Rodriguez, and others, have been linked with moves away from West Ham. Niclas Fullkrug was also rumored to be on his way out until a hamstring injury sidelined him for the next three months.
Against this backdrop, fans were surprised by transfer news that surfaced yesterday.
David Sullivan has found himself in a tough spot after a major West Ham transfer leak. Football correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed that West Ham had made a fresh £40m bid for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.
However, Bailey later informed Hammers News that West Ham’s offer was rejected, as Villa is asking for between £65-70m to even consider selling the Colombian forward.
This asking price is £30m more than what West Ham could have secured Duran for in the summer before Tim Steidten opted to allocate funds for other signings, including Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.
Interestingly, Bailey also mentioned that Duran himself would be open to a move, as he is eager to secure a first-choice role.
Since news of the Duran bid broke, Sullivan has confirmed the move to Claret and Hugh.
“We’ve tried, but PSG and a few foreign clubs have outbid us,” the site was told.
“We never mention to supporters failed bids as it frustrates them.”

Havertz’s wife shares threats after Arsenal loss
Kai Havertz’s wife, Sophia, revealed the abusive messages she received on social media following Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
On Monday, she posted two updates on her Instagram story, including one in which someone threatened to “slaughter” her unborn baby.
Arsenal were eliminated from the cup after losing to United in a penalty shootout. Havertz, the German striker, missed a chance to secure the win at the Emirates Stadium when he fired over from a close range and later had his penalty saved during the shootout.
Sophia Havertz voiced her outrage over the vile abuse she faced after the match.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” she posted.
In response to the threat to her baby, she posted: “I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…”
Football authorities and law enforcement have been working to address online abuse directed at players.
Last year, the Football Association of England announced it was allocating approximately £25,000 ($32,000) to support police efforts in tackling such incidents during the European Championship.
During the 2021 Euros, England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho faced racial abuse on social media after missing penalties in a shootout loss to Italy in the final.
FIFA, the global governing body, has implemented a Social Media Protection Service (SMPS) to safeguard players, teams, and officials from online harassment by ensuring their social media accounts remain free from hate.
According to SMPS, during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, 20% of the players were targeted with discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages, with about half of these being anti-gay, sexual, or sexist in nature.
