Arsenal ready to trigger player’s release clause in blockbuster January deal
Arsenal remain determined to secure Athletic Club winger Nico Williams as they aim to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.
Reports suggest the Gunners are actively engaging with the player’s agent and are poised to act swiftly to finalize the signing of the Spanish international, who has a €58 million release clause in his contract with the Basque side.
However, Arsenal’s next move depends on Williams agreeing to the transfer—a condition they failed to meet during their pursuit of the player last summer. If the 22-year-old approves the deal, Mikel Arteta’s team is ready to trigger his release clause.
This potential acquisition is seen as a cost-effective alternative to AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, another Arsenal target valued between €75–€80 million. Williams’ lower release clause offers a financially viable solution for the London club.
The urgency to strengthen their attacking options has been amplified by Bukayo Saka’s injury, which is expected to sideline the England star for up to three months. Saka’s absence has left a significant gap on the right wing, exposing Arsenal’s lack of depth in wide positions.
While Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard provide flexibility, both players are more natural on the left flank. Williams could fill the void on the right wing temporarily and later compete for a starting role, adding balance to the squad.
Arsenal’s need for reinforcements is further complicated by the struggles and unavailability of Raheem Sterling, on loan from Chelsea, who has failed to impress and is currently injured.
Athletic Club, meanwhile, are reportedly prepared for Williams’ departure and have identified Norwich City’s Borja Sainz as his potential replacement.
At just 22 years old, Nico Williams is regarded as one of Spain’s brightest young talents, boasting exceptional pace, technical ability, and the versatility to play on either flank.
His skill set fits seamlessly into Arteta’s tactical framework, and his release clause aligns well with Arsenal’s financial planning, offering high-quality reinforcement at a reasonable cost.
Securing Williams would not only address Arsenal’s immediate needs but also enhance their attacking depth, fostering healthy competition among Saka, Martinelli, and Trossard. This addition would help Arsenal stay competitive in their pursuit of the Premier League title and European success.
Whether Williams or another marquee signing joins the squad, Arsenal are committed to maintaining their momentum and strengthening their bid for silverware this season.
Arsenal told to ‘break the bank’ for £75m player who can ‘take them to another level’
Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson has called on the club to “go all out” to secure Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
The Swedish international showcased his talent once again with a standout performance against Manchester United on Monday, scoring the opening goal in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory with a well-placed header.
Arsenal has been strongly linked with the 25-year-old forward, who has also reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.
Merson believes that even with Gabriel Jesus showing improved form, Arsenal should make a substantial bid to bring Isak to the Emirates.
“If I were Arsenal, and I had the money I’d go out any buy Isak,” he told Sky Sports News. “I’d break the bank for him. I think he’s the best of the best and I think he takes Arsenal to another level.
“I’m looking at the all-round picture and I’m looking at next season as well. I think if he can get hold of Isak, who I think is the best in the business at the moment, I think that will be a massive coup for Arsenal.”
Merson even said he would prefer to take Isak over Manchester City striker Erling Haaland at the moment. “The way Arsenal play I would have to go with Isak,” he added. “He probably suits Arsenal more than Haaland.”
CIES estimates Alexander Isak’s current value at approximately £75 million. With more than three years remaining on his contract, Newcastle are expected to demand a substantial fee for the Swedish forward.
Reports suggest Isak has expressed a desire for Champions League football to remain at St James’ Park. However, despite winning four consecutive league matches, Eddie Howe’s team faces uncertainty in securing a top-four finish, as they currently sit fifth in the Premier League table.
Meanwhile, Arsenal closed the gap on league leaders Liverpool to six points with a 3-1 victory over Brentford on New Year’s Day, though they have played one game more than their rivals. While advocating for the signing of Isak, Paul Merson also commended Gabriel Jesus for his recent resurgence, highlighted by another goal in the Brentford match.
“What I like about Jesus he’s got back in the team and he’s said ‘you know what I’m gonna get in the box’,” he said. “’I need to score goals if I’m going to stay in this football team’. And that’s what he’s done. Now he’s got six in four and that goal yesterday was a proper poachers goal.”
Kai Havertz leads Arsenal’s league scoring charts for the 2024/25 season with seven goals. However, the spotlight on Arsenal’s attacking options has intensified following Bukayo Saka’s injury setback, as the winger is expected to be sidelined until March after undergoing surgery for a hamstring injury.

Unai Emery: Two Aston Villa deals are ‘close’
Unai Emery has confirmed that Aston Villa is nearing the completion of a £21 million deal to sign Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.
The Netherlands international is set to join for an initial fee of £19 million, a move that will also facilitate Jaden Philogene’s transfer to Ipswich for £21 million.
Villa remains interested in further signings to bolster their squad for the second half of the season. However, Emery acknowledged that new additions would depend on player departures to ensure compliance with profit and sustainability regulations.
Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza is reportedly on Villa’s radar, though a potential transfer of Diego Carlos to Fenerbahce appears to be falling through.
“We are in the transfer window and we are trying to do some movements,” said Emery. “One of those movements is the possibility to sign Malen. In case Malen signs for us, it is close, we have to leave one player, which is Jaden [Philogene].
“We are alert and we want to always be ready to improve the squad with the players and, of course, sometimes some players want to leave us for different circumstances as well.
“We are moving forward with some circumstances like I am telling you from today until the last day of the window.
“If we are changing one player, Malen and Jaden, that’s the first. Maybe two or three players more, we can do another deal of some players leaving and some players joining us.”
Diego Carlos will miss Wednesday’s match against Everton due to injury. Ross Barkley (calf), John McGinn (hamstring), and Pau Torres (foot) are also sidelined.
Among the three, McGinn is the nearest to making a comeback but is expected to remain out for approximately another week.

David Sullivan has just made a rod for his own back with major new West Ham transfer leak
David Sullivan has regained control of West Ham’s transfer dealings this January, and many fans are already noticing the shift.
Frustrated with how Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui spent £155m in the summer, Sullivan, the majority owner, has taken back full control of signings.
While it was always Sullivan and the board who had the final say on deals suggested by Steidten, Lopetegui, and David Moyes, Sullivan made it clear that he is now in charge once again, with input from Steidten and the manager.
This move has divided opinion among West Ham supporters, especially with some of the players the club is reportedly targeting.
While Sullivan’s return to the transfer scene invites potential criticism, it’s worth noting that he was responsible for securing one of the summer’s standout signings, Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger has impressed fans with his exciting performances, and at just 22, he fits the profile of the type of player many expected West Ham to build around. Best of all, the Hammers managed to sign Summerville for a reasonable £26m.
Now, Sullivan will be judged on what he accomplishes in this window. The top priorities are bringing in a striker and a midfielder, with a potential need for a defender depending on the status of Jean-Clair Todibo’s abductor injury.
Over the past week, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of strikers linked with the club, prompting some cynics to claim that Sullivan is resorting to a “scattergun approach.”
Ultimately, West Ham’s success this month will come down to who they manage to sign, not the noise surrounding it. Heading into January, the club’s owners made it clear that West Ham is nearing its PSR limit and would need to sell players in order to buy.
This has led to an increased focus on loan moves, with many reports indicating that West Ham is looking to strengthen without exceeding financial constraints.
“We are up to our FFP maximum,” the senior London Stadium contact told Hammers News.
“So unless we increase income or move players there is very little room to do much.
“But never say never.”
Several players, including Edson Alvarez, Vladimir Coufal, Guido Rodriguez, and others, have been linked with moves away from West Ham. Niclas Fullkrug was also rumored to be on his way out until a hamstring injury sidelined him for the next three months.
Against this backdrop, fans were surprised by transfer news that surfaced yesterday.
David Sullivan has found himself in a tough spot after a major West Ham transfer leak. Football correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed that West Ham had made a fresh £40m bid for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.
However, Bailey later informed Hammers News that West Ham’s offer was rejected, as Villa is asking for between £65-70m to even consider selling the Colombian forward.
This asking price is £30m more than what West Ham could have secured Duran for in the summer before Tim Steidten opted to allocate funds for other signings, including Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.
Interestingly, Bailey also mentioned that Duran himself would be open to a move, as he is eager to secure a first-choice role.
Since news of the Duran bid broke, Sullivan has confirmed the move to Claret and Hugh.
“We’ve tried, but PSG and a few foreign clubs have outbid us,” the site was told.
“We never mention to supporters failed bids as it frustrates them.”

Havertz’s wife shares threats after Arsenal loss
Kai Havertz’s wife, Sophia, revealed the abusive messages she received on social media following Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
On Monday, she posted two updates on her Instagram story, including one in which someone threatened to “slaughter” her unborn baby.
Arsenal were eliminated from the cup after losing to United in a penalty shootout. Havertz, the German striker, missed a chance to secure the win at the Emirates Stadium when he fired over from a close range and later had his penalty saved during the shootout.
Sophia Havertz voiced her outrage over the vile abuse she faced after the match.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” she posted.
In response to the threat to her baby, she posted: “I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…”
Football authorities and law enforcement have been working to address online abuse directed at players.
Last year, the Football Association of England announced it was allocating approximately £25,000 ($32,000) to support police efforts in tackling such incidents during the European Championship.
During the 2021 Euros, England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho faced racial abuse on social media after missing penalties in a shootout loss to Italy in the final.
FIFA, the global governing body, has implemented a Social Media Protection Service (SMPS) to safeguard players, teams, and officials from online harassment by ensuring their social media accounts remain free from hate.
According to SMPS, during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, 20% of the players were targeted with discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages, with about half of these being anti-gay, sexual, or sexist in nature.
