Recruitment has been challenging for the Magpies this year, with no additions significantly strengthening the starting XI—a factor the club recognizes has impacted Eddie Howe’s team.
While the focus has been on future prospects, Newcastle secured Will Osula from Sheffield United. Although Osula is considered a raw talent, the club sees great potential in him. Additionally, Vakhtang Salia is set to join Newcastle in 2025.
Mitchell understands the importance of being strategic in the transfer market, prioritizing players from underexplored regions or those in advantageous contract situations to maximize value.
Josh Acheampong signs new Chelsea contract
Josh Acheampong had been seen as a potential target for Newcastle, with his Chelsea contract set to expire in 2026.
The 18-year-old right-back appeared poised to leave Stamford Bridge as contract negotiations stalled. Chelsea even sidelined Acheampong, suggesting his future lay elsewhere.
However, the situation has taken a significant turn. After Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca addressed the contract talks last week, the club has now officially announced that Acheampong has signed a new deal, extending his stay until 2029.
Acheampong has also been reintegrated into the first-team setup, starting in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League match against Astana and appearing as an unused substitute in their Premier League victory on Sunday.
Newcastle need to address right-back situation
With Josh Acheampong committing to a new contract at Chelsea, Newcastle will no longer pursue the promising young right-back.
This development is unfortunate, as Acheampong would have been a smart addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Kieran Trippier’s situation.
The 34-year-old attempted to leave Newcastle during the summer, but his move was blocked by Howe and Paul Mitchell. While Trippier stayed put for now, a departure in 2025 seems increasingly likely.
For the starting lineup, this isn’t a pressing concern, as Newcastle already have Tino Livramento, who was signed to succeed Trippier in the long term.
However, Livramento will still require reliable cover. While Emil Krafth could step in, he is also needed as backup at center-back for Fabian Schar. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Leo Shahar, despite his immense potential, might not yet be ready for senior-level football.
Acheampong’s signing could have allowed Newcastle to part ways with Trippier, but his new Chelsea deal leaves Paul Mitchell searching for another solution to address the Magpies’ right-back depth.
