New footage has surfaced appearing to show Gabriel refusing to shake hands with Harry Maguire after Manchester United’s thrilling win over Arsenal on Sunday.
United pulled off a dramatic 3–2 victory at the Emirates Stadium, with Matheus Cunha scoring a late winner in the 87th minute to clinch all three points and dent Arsenal’s title hopes.
Tempers flared in the closing stages of the match when Maguire and Gabriel clashed, with the Arsenal defender ending up on the turf. The tension didn’t fade at the final whistle either.
As referee Craig Pawson brought the game to an end, Maguire offered a handshake in an apparent attempt to smooth things over, but footage from Malaysian broadcaster Stadium Astro shows Gabriel ignoring the gesture.
United defender Noussair Mazraoui then noticed the dispute and stepped in, shoving Gabriel in the chest and escalating the confrontation. The situation was eventually defused when Senne Lammens intervened, holding Gabriel back and ushering him towards the tunnel.
Maguire was then free to savour the dramatic victory while Gabriel exited stage left. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Maguire said: “It was absolutely massive.
“We know that the first game [under Michael Carrick], the [Manchester] Derby at Old Trafford, you’re always up for them, and you know that one-off results can happen, so we had to back it up today.
“We spoke about it before the game, coming to the league leaders, who have been excellent this year, I must say, they ask a lot of questions of you, to come here and have the setback late on to get the winner, it was a magnificent performance.”
Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Lineker said: “I know people have a pop at him, even people in the game have a pop at him, and I know that he can be turned by a striker with pace, but he makes up for it to a degree with his intelligence.
“He can play as well, he’s good on the ball and he’s never let England down when he’s played for his country.
“I would also say he’s bloody brilliant in both boxes from set-pieces. There is an obvious weakness with the slight lack of pack but he’s got the experience to handle that.”
