Failed Rangers trialist now in advanced talks for Premier League transfer after 2023 Auchenhowie visit

Rangers have faced strong criticism for their recent recruitment, with most of their summer signings failing to make an impact.

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart were dismissed at the end of last month, taking the blame for yet another disappointing transfer window.

Although the club was fairly busy during the summer, several additions — including Youssef Chermiti — have struggled to impress in the early part of the season.

Since Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin in October, performances have improved slightly, but the team is still feeling the effects of poor recruitment decisions.

Rangers’ problems in the transfer market appear to stretch further back than the Thelwell–Stewart era, as winger Yan Diomande — who once trialled with the club — is now attracting attention from major Premier League sides.

Diomande spent time on trial at Rangers in October 2023 and even played for the B team against Monaco, but the Ivory Coast winger ultimately didn’t sign. Instead, he joined Spanish side Leganés a year later.

Last summer, RB Leipzig triggered his release clause and signed him for around £17 million.

According to Sky Sports Switzerland, the 19-year-old is now on the radar of Liverpool and Tottenham.

For Rangers, it’s a hugely embarrassing situation: a player who failed to earn a deal at Ibrox two years ago is now being linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

To make matters worse, Diomande revealed he actually wanted to join Rangers, but the club could not reach an agreement with his agent regarding wages — something he explained in an interview with Rangers Review in September.

He said: “I was on trial at Glasgow Rangers. It’s not true that I didn’t want to sign for them, my agent at the time demanded too much money.”

With current winger Oliver Antman struggling for Rangers this season, and now set to be out for an extended spell, it simply highlights how bad of a decision it was to let Diomande walk away.
