Alexander Zverev appeared to be in discomfort during his quarterfinal match against Flavio Cobolli at the Halle Open, abruptly leaving the court mid-game. After the match, the German explained the unexpected exit.
The showdown between Zverev and Cobolli at the Terra Wortmann Open began with high intensity. Zverev, ranked World No. 3, took an early lead by breaking Cobolli’s serve in the opening game. As they battled to a 40-40 tie in the second game, Zverev began to show clear signs of unease.
He suddenly left the court, causing concern among spectators. Later, Zverev revealed that he had suddenly started feeling “really bad” during the match but was fortunately able to recover just as quickly.
“I felt fine before the match and then out of nowhere I felt really, really bad and felt ill. I went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt okay again. So, I don’t know what it was. I’ve never experienced that before. Hopefully I will be fine in the next couple of hours.”
After his unexpected break, Zverev came back strong to take the first set 6-4. He then edged out a tight second-set tiebreak 7-6(6), securing his spot in the Halle semifinals for the fifth time.

Alexander Zverev kicked off his Terra Wortmann Open run with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Marcos Giron. He was then pushed to the limit by Lorenzo Sonego, eventually pulling through in a tight contest 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2).
Following his quarterfinal victory over Flavio Cobolli, Zverev now prepares for a semifinal showdown with his long-time rival, Daniil Medvedev. Speaking about the upcoming clash with the Russian, the World No. 3 shared his thoughts.
“I think it’s the guy I’ve played the most in my career. Definitely he’s one of the toughest opponents in my career. It’s going to be a great match and I’m really looking forward to facing him.”
Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev have crossed paths 19 times throughout their careers, with Medvedev holding the upper hand in their head-to-head record.
The Russian has claimed victory in 12 of those matches, including their last three meetings. Zverev’s most recent win over Medvedev came in 2023 at the ATP Cincinnati Masters 1000.
