Emma Raducanu to miss major Wimbledon seeding benefits after Berlin Open withdrawal

Emma Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from the upcoming 2025 Berlin Tennis Open has effectively ended her chances of earning a seeded position at Wimbledon. She was slated to compete in the WTA 500 event, scheduled for June 16–22 in Germany.

Unfortunately, a recurring back injury has resurfaced, ruling her out of the tournament.

With the Berlin Tennis Open and the Nottingham Open serving as the final opportunities for players to boost their rankings before Wimbledon seedings are finalized, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Currently ranked No. 37 in the world, Raducanu recently exited the HSBC Championships in the quarterfinals after falling to Zheng Qinwen.

During that match, she took a medical timeout to address her back issue, which appears to have worsened.

She is projected to climb slightly in the rankings based on her latest performance, but a deep run in Berlin—alongside favorable results from other players—might have pushed her into the top 32 and secured her a seeded spot.

Without that seeding, Raducanu now faces the risk of drawing a top-10 opponent in the early rounds at Wimbledon.

Being seeded offers some protection, ensuring seeded players avoid each other until at least the third round—an advantage she’ll now miss.

Beyond the ranking implications, her injury setback also denies her valuable match time on grass, which could have been crucial preparation.

That said, there’s still a chance she could participate in one final warm-up event before Wimbledon begins.

Emma Raducanu still on the entry list for the Eastbourne Open 2025

Although Emma Raducanu won’t be heading to Berlin next week, she’s still listed to compete at the Eastbourne Open 2025, scheduled for June 23–28 — just a week before Wimbledon.

Her participation in Eastbourne, however, will hinge on how well she recovers from her latest back issue.

Raducanu is unlikely to risk aggravating the injury if it means compromising her chances at Wimbledon.

Last year, she reached the fourth round at the All England Club and was favored to beat qualifier Lulu Sun, but a surprise upset ended her run and dashed hopes of a first Wimbledon quarterfinal.

She’ll be eager to better that result this year, though her unseeded status could make the road much tougher.

Missing out on a seed means Raducanu might face higher-ranked opponents earlier than usual — a potential hurdle in her pursuit of a deeper run at her home Slam.
