Despite the Mavericks’ injury struggles and uncertain playoff hopes, Anthony Davis remains determined to return before the season ends.
While the team prefers a cautious approach, Davis—currently rehabbing in the G League—could rejoin Dallas as early as next week.
The Mavericks have dealt with injuries throughout the season, including the loss of Kyrie Irving to a torn ACL and the absence of key players like Derrick Lively, Daniel Gafford, and Dante Exum. Despite these setbacks, Davis is committed to making his comeback.
According to ESPN’s Tim McMahon, the Mavericks have tried to convince Davis to sit out for the remainder of the season, but he remains ‘steadfast’ in his decision to return, possibly as early as next week.
“[Anthony Davis] is steadfast in his determination to want to return this season, maybe as soon as next week despite the fact there are people within the Mavericks organization that have tried to talk him out of it,” the NBA insider reported.
Davis made a strong first impression for Dallas on February 8, scoring 26 points in 31 minutes before suffering a hip injury that has sidelined him since.
Currently rehabbing with the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ G League affiliate, he has been participating in 5-on-5 drills.
While his competitive nature fuels his determination to return, the team must weigh the risks against the potential reward.
Dallas holds a 33-36 record, sitting 10th in the Western Conference with a likely Play-In Tournament appearance.
However, with key players like Kyrie Irving out, their playoff hopes remain uncertain. Although Davis’ commitment to playing is commendable, prioritizing his long-term health may be the wiser decision.
