Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly determined to stay at Old Trafford, despite rumors that Ruben Amorim is looking to bring in a new goalkeeper.
Onana joined United in the summer of 2023 for £47.5 million from Inter Milan, but his performances have been inconsistent, leaving fans and critics unconvinced.
This season alone, he has made five notable errors, including being blamed for both goals conceded in last week’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town.
In his 65 Premier League appearances, Onana has let in 97 goals and kept just 16 clean sheets.
Recent reports suggested that Onana’s future at United was uncertain, with Amorim reportedly eyeing a replacement. However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Onana is “intent on staying” with the club next season, despite his struggles.
Samuel Luckhurst reports that while Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper, Onana sees United as the only club he wants to play for.
Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is expected to retire at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Additionally, Altay Bayindir may seek a move away from United in search of regular playing time, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.
Another factor complicating matters is the Africa Cup of Nations, which takes place in December. Onana’s participation in the tournament could leave United short-handed during the busy festive period, potentially prompting the club to explore the market for another goalkeeper.
MEN add, “If the club wished to sell Onana, they would require a fee of £28.32million (the remaining cost of his fee spread over the remaining three years of his contract) to avoid a loss under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.”
United’s next challenge is a Europa League clash against Real Sociedad in San Sebastián on Thursday.
Amorim now personally pushing Man Utd chiefs to sign “exciting” £66m winger
According to reports, Ruben Amorim is urging Manchester United and INEOS to secure the signing of an “exciting” attacking talent this summer, who has a £66 million release clause.
As the 2024/25 season continues to underwhelm for the Red Devils, Amorim is eager to reach the end of May, when he can shift his focus—alongside the club’s leadership—to recruiting players who align with his tactical vision.
This summer is expected to be a busy one for United, but the club will once again need to offload players before making new signings. One player who could be on the move is winger Alejandro Garnacho, who was linked with a January exit and is now again rumored to depart in the summer. Barcelona are reportedly interested in the Argentine as they aim to strengthen their attack, and with Garnacho valued at £70 million, his sale could provide Amorim with the funds to bring in his preferred targets.
One potential replacement for Garnacho is Florian Wirtz, who is said to be high on United’s summer wishlist. However, the Red Devils face stiff competition, as Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich are also keen on the German international.
But Wirtz isn’t the only option. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Hard Tackle), United are also interested in Sporting CP’s Francisco Trincao, with Amorim pushing the club to finalize a deal. Trincao has become an attractive target due to his versatility and high-energy performances in the final third, fitting seamlessly into Amorim’s system. However, United aren’t alone in their pursuit, as Manchester City are also reportedly interested, with Hugo Viana advocating for his new club to sign the 25-year-old.
Trincao’s contract with Sporting CP includes an €80 million (£66 million) release clause, but United are expected to negotiate for a lower fee. This could prove challenging, as Barcelona hold a 50% sell-on clause in their agreement with Sporting, meaning the Portuguese club will aim to maximize the transfer fee.
Described as a “really exciting player” by former Wolves technical director Scott Sellars, Trincao joined Sporting on loan from Barcelona in July 2022 before making the move permanent a year later. Last season, the attacker contributed nine goals and six assists, helping Sporting clinch the Portuguese league title.

Trincao has carried his impressive form into this season, and with Amorim already familiar with his abilities, Manchester United are closely monitoring his performances.
The winger could be the perfect replacement for Garnacho if the Argentine departs. It’s evident at Old Trafford that not all current players fit Amorim’s system, so for the team to succeed under his management, the Red Devils will need to bring in players who can excel within his tactical framework—and Trincao fits the bill perfectly.
